According to Hindu legend stories, An Asura called Tharugasuran tormented the Devas and the sages because of the goodfortune granted on him. They approached Lord Brahmma for remedy. Brahma told him to worship Manikoodapura Peruman of South Kailash; a son of Shiva would appear and he would kill Tharugasuran according to Brahma. The Devas and sages to escape from the Tharugasuran, they took the form of ants and started worshipping shiva. They used ‘Karuneithal’ flower for worship. As the Linga was too soft and slippery and steep, they could not reach the top of the Lord Shiva. The Lord turned himself into an ant hill. He bent his head to make the ants climb without sliding down. Lord came to their rescue, destroyed the Tharugasuran.so the Lord shiva called as Erumbeeswarar.
The temple is situated on a small hill and one has to climb 125 stone steps to reach the top of the hill. Shiva Linga in the sanctum sanctorum is in an ant-hill shape with ups and downs without a perfect shape. This temple of Lord Shiva is built on top of a 60 ft high hill and can be accessed by a flight of steps. So it is also called malai kovil or hill temple.
