Kaviyoor Mahadeva Temple is located at Kaviyoor, Pathanamthitta District of Kerala state and also dedicated to Lord Mahadeva (Lord Shiva with Goddess Shakti) and Lord Hanuman. This temple is one of the oldest temples of Kerala which is said to be built in the early 10th century. The Kaviyoor Mahadeva Temple is located on a hillock, and one of the structural temples of Kerala built in a gable-shaped structure.

The Kaviyoor Mahadeva Temple is covered with copper roof and contains a golden flag mast. This temple consists of balickalpura, vaathilmaadam, namaskara mandapam and sreekoivil (sanctum) which are well decorated with wood carvings. The carvings of this temple shines with the texts of great Hindu epics Mahabharata and Ramayana.


The presiding deity of this Kaviyoor Mahadeva Temple is Lord Mahadeva (Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati) and Lord Hanuman. The other deities of this temple are Lord Ganapathi, Lord Dakshinamurthy, Lord Mahavishnu, Naga raja, Mahahrishi and Dwarapalakas etc. The main offerings for Lord Hanuman in Kaviyoor Mahadeva Temple is Vadamala and Aval Neivedyam.

This temple contains precious and collection of ornaments such as Golden pots, ezhunnallippu chatams, Golden Reliefs of Deities, Golden Umbrellas, and Golden Chains etc. The mandapam and the sanctum of Kaviyoor Mahadeva Temple are covered with rafter shoes. Kaviyoor Mahadeva Temple is one of the famous temple which is under the maintenance of Travancore Devaswom Board.

Pooja Timings

The temples remains open in the morning from 3.30 am to 11.30 am and in the evening from 5.00 pm to 8.00 pm.

The main trunk road to Sabarimala is Pathanamthitta – Pamba. The distance from Pathanamthitta District center to Sabarimala is about 70 km. Kerala State Road Transport Corporation operates, regular daily bus services from Pathanamthitta, Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulum and Kumili and also operates more services to all major towns of Kerala and neighboring states.
