Keesaragutta Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva and also called as Sri Rama Lingeswara Temple is situated in Keesara, Rangareddy district of Telangana. The temple is located on a small hillock. The presiding deity of this Keesaragutta temple is Lord Shiva along with His consorts Goddess Bhavani, the tutelary deity of the Maratha leader Shivaji (Indian warrior king and a member of Maratha clan) and Goddess Shivadurga. The presiding deity is found in the form of a sacred Shivalingam.
Legend says that Lord Sri Rama is the one who installed the Shivalingam at Keesara to expiate for the sin of killing the demon king Ravana, who was a Brahmin. To atone for His sin, Lord Sri Rama selected the hillock of Keesara and asked Lord Hanuman to bring a Shivalingam from Varanasi to install it in the hill of Keesara. Since Lord Hanuman was delayed in arriving with the Shivalingam at the appropriate time, Lord Shiva was said to have appeared before Lord Sri Rama and presented a Shivalingam by Himself for the installation. And hence the Shivalingam at this temple is called as Swayambhu (self-manifested) lingam.
After the installation of Shivalingam presented by Lord Shiva, Lord Hanuman returned from Varanasi with 101 lingams for selection. And He felt distressed by seeing the lingam already has been installed. And in anger that His lingam was not installed, Lord Hanuman threw the 101 lingams which he brought from Varanasi, all around the hillock. And it is said that even today there are various lingams found scattered around the temple.
To pacify Lord Hanuman, Lord Sri Rama ordered that first precedence would be given to Lord Hanuman at this temple. And it is still followed in this temple that the first precedence is given to the deity of Lord Hanuman. Lord Sri Rama also ordered that the hillock would be called by the name kesarigiri (Lord Hanuman, the son of Kesari). And over a time the name was changed to be Keesara and the sacred hill was called as Keesaragutta. The sacred Shivalingam at Keesaragutta temple is popularly called as Ramalingeswara as Lord Sri Rama had installed the Shivalingam.
