Kodanda Rama Swamy temple is located at Vontimitta, Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh and also dedicated to Lord Rama (Lord Vishnu). Kodanda Rama Swamy temple is listed to be one of the largest temples of Andhra Pradesh. The temple depicts artistic skill of the Vijayanagara architectural style, which was said to be in existence from 16th century. The temple is believed to be built by Vontudu and Mittudu. Vontudu and Mittudu was earlierly said to be robbers and was later became the great devotees of Lord Rama.

Bammera Potana, an Indian Telugu poet who lived in Vontimitta, wrote a great canon Maha Bhagavatham in Telugu language and dedicated it to Lord Rama. Vavilakolanu Subba Rao also called as Andhra Valmiki as he translated one of the greatest epics of Indian literature Ramayana into Telugu language was also said to have worshiped Lord Rama at this temple. Annamacharya, a 15th-century Hindu saint and Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, a 17th-century French gem merchant and traveler, was also said to have visited this temple. There is a Mandapam (hall) dedicated to Bhavanasi Mala Obanna, a devotee of Lord Rama who sang songs in praise of Lord Rama.

Specialty

The presiding deity of this temple is Lord Rama, who is worshiped by the name Lord Kodanda Rama Swamy. Lord Rama is found with a bow in His right hand and arrow in His left hand in a standing posture along with Goddess Sita and Lalshmana. Goddess Sita and Lakshmana are found to be carved as a composing images, which is made out of a single rock. The other deities of the temple are Lord Vishnu, Lord Krishna, Lakshmana, Goddess Sita, Lord Hanuman, and Lord Ganesha etc.

Kodanda Rama Swamy temple has been notified as an Ancient Monument (N-AP-50) by Archaeological Survey of India. The two sacred Theertham (temple tank) of Kodanda Rama Swamy temple are Rama theertham and Lakshmana theertham. The temple has three Gopurams, monumental tower, facing east, north and south. The east facing tower is the central tower which is a five tiered structured building. The mandapam of the temple contains 32 pillars and hence it is called as Madhyarangaradapam.
