Bhadrachalam Temple otherwise called as Sree Seetha Ramachandra Swamy Temple, located at Bhadrachalam, Khammam district of Telangana. Bhadrachalam Temple is mainly dedicated to Lord Rama (the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu). Bhadrachalam Temple is closely associated with the life events of Saint Kancharla Gopanna, who was a great devotee of Lord Rama lived in the 17th century. Kancharla Gopanna was a 17th century saint and was a good composer of Carnatic music. He was most popular in both lyric composing and setting them to music. And his mesmerizing lyrics to Lord Rama are the most popular in classical music which was revered as Ramadasu Keetanalu. Kancharla Gopanna was also called by the names Bhakta Ramadasu or Bhadrachala Ramadasu.

It was believed that Kancharla Gopanna lived in a village called Nelakondapalli which is near Bhadrachalam. Kancharla Gopanna was said to have stayed with Seetha and Lakshmana near Parnasala during the exile period of Kancharla Gopanna. When Kancharla Gopanna was a revenue officer of Bhadrachalam, he reconstructed the temple which was under ruins. And he was prisoned by Sultan, saying that he built the temple from the government treasury and it was believed that Lord Rama majestically gave Sultan the money which was spent by Kancharla Gopanna. Kancharla Gopanna got released and started composing and sang infinite number of songs to Lord Rama in Telugu language.

Specialty

The presiding deity of Bhadrachalam Temple is Lord Rama, the seventh avatar of Lord Vishnu. Lord Rama is seen here with four hands, holding Sangu on His right and with Chakra in His left hand and with bow and arrow in the other two hands. Goddess Seetha is seen to be patronized on the left lap of Lord Rama and the deity of Lakshmana is also found in the shrine. Bhadrachalam Temple exhibit the importance of Ramayana, one of the great canon of Hindu literature. The location Bhadrachalam exists in Dandakaranya, the spiritual significant region where Lord Rama, Goddess Seetha and Lakshmana had spent 14 years of Vanavasam.

Lord Vishnu was believed to be manifested in the form of Lord Rama to accomplish the promise of Lord Vishnu to His devotee Bhadra, a sage who made penance to solicit Lord Vishnu to be seated on His head. On His return from the vanavasam, Lord Rama along with Goddess Seetha, and Lakshmana arrived before the sage Bhadra following the Sangu blown by Lord Rama, and blessed the sage, which signifies the Gajendra Moksham. As Lord Rama takes His abode on the head of the sage Bhadra (immovable hill) the shrine was came to be called as Bhadrachalam. There is a sub shrine of Goddess Lakshmi inside the temple complex of Bhadrachalam temple. Goddess Lakshmi shrine was said to be built by Kamasamudram Appalachary, the resident of the village called Thatigummi, which is located in the border of Khammam district.
