Sri Karunakara Perumal Temple, Thirukaaragam is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and also one of the 108 Divya Desam Temples is situated inside the temple premises of ‘Ulagalandha Perumal Temple’ at the Kancheepuram city of Tamil Nadu. This Ulagalandha Perumal Temple houses four temples of ‘108 Divya Desam Temples’ on it own.They are named as ‘Thirukkarvaanam’, ‘Thirukaaragam’, ‘Thiruooragam’ and ‘Thiruneeragam’.
Sri Karunakara Perumal Temple is associated with the sage named Kaaraha. It is said that the sage Kaaraha performed penance towards Lord Vishnu to obtain knowledge and he blessed with the knowledge by Lord Vishnu. The word ‘Kaar’ represents Black clouds, which gives rain to enrich the world. As a result, the Lord does not expect anything but only the true devotion towards Him. Sri Karunakara Perumal Temple is situated very close to Kamakshi Amman Temple.
The presiding deity of this Sri Karunakara Perumal Temple is Lord Karunakara Perumal, seated on Adisesha, facing towards the south direction and the Goddess of this temple is Goddess Padma Mani Nachiyar also called as ‘Ramamani Nachiyar’. The Vimanam (tower above the sanctum sanctorum) of Sri Karunakara Perumal Temple is called Vamana Vimanam or Ramaya Vimanam.
The Pushkarani (temple tank) of Sri Karunakara Perumal Temple is called Akraya Pushkarani. Sri Karunakara Perumal Temple is glorified in Nalayira Divya Prabandham, the Vaishnava canon, and hymns were sung by the saint Thirumangai Azhwar.
