Trilinga temples are also called as Trilinga Desam, which refers to “the country of the three Lingas (Shivalingams)” and also situated in Andhra Pradesh. The mythology was that Lord Shiva has been descended as Shivalingam on three sacred mountains. The three sacred mountains are:

  1. Kaleswaram in Telangana
  2. Srisailam in Rayalaseema
  3. Bhimeswaram or Draksharamam in Coastal Andhra

The three holy mountains are marked as the boundaries of the entire Telugu country, which is presently called as Telangana. It is said that in a Telugu canon named Andhra Kaumudi, Sri Andhra Vishnu, a legendary warrior by the name Viṣhṇu who became famous as a very valorous saviour of his small kingdom, have built a massive wall, connecting Srisailam, Bhimeswaram, and Kaleswaram with the Mahendra hills. And it is said that in the three hills were the three eyed Ishwara, the supreme god Shiva, was found bearing the trident in His hand and was addressed by a group of divinities resided in the form of three Shivalingams.

And hence the three hills and its associated temples are known as Trilinga Kshetras (temples) or Trilinga Desam. The legend also says that Andhra Vishnu was assisted by the divine angels and fought with Nishambhu, the great giant, for thirteen yugas (ages of life of the world) and killed him in battle and took up His residence on the banks of river Godavari along with the sages (saints).
